هنر آرایش در ایران باستان، به عنوان یکی از کهن‌ترین جلوه‌های فرهنگی، در دوره‌های مختلف تاریخی شکل‌ها و نمودهای متمایزی یافته است. پژوهش حاضر با تمرکز بر اهمیت و نقش این ابزارها می‌کوشد یکی از جنبه‌های کمتر مطالعۀ شده تاریخ و فرهنگ ایران را شناسایی و تحلیل کند و بدین ترتیب رویکردی نوین برای درک ساختارهای اجتماعی، باورها و مناسک فرهنگی ارائه دهد. این پژوهش در پی پاسخ‌گویی به دو پرسش اصلی است: نخست، اهمیت تاریخی و فرهنگی لوازم خودآرایی در ایران باستان چیست؟ و دوم، این ابزارها در میان کدام گروه‌های اجتماعی رواج داشته‌اند؟ برای پاسخ به این پرسش‌ها، شواهد تاریخی و باستان‌شناختی با بهره‌گیری از یافته‌های کاوش‌ها و منابع مکتوب تحلیل شده‌اند. روش پژوهش توصیفی- تحلیلی است و داده‌ها به دو شیوۀ کتابخانه‌ای و موزه‌ای گردآوری شده‌اند. تمرکز پژوهش بر هفت گروه اصلی لوازم آرایش است؛ گروه‌هایی که نمونه‌هایی از آن‌ها در موزۀ آبگینه و سفالینه‌های ایران و نیز در موزه‌ها و مجموعه‌های شخصی خارج از ایران، ازجمله موزۀ بریتانیا، موزۀ لوور، موزۀ متروپولیتن و موزۀ دانشگاه پنسیلوانیا نگه‌داری می‌شوند. یافته‌های پژوهش نشان می‌دهد که لوازم خودآرایی نه تنها بخشی جدایی‌ناپذیر از زندگی مردم بوده‌اند، بلکه استمرار حضور آن‌ها در دوره‌های مختلف تاریخی، اهمیت پایدار تاریخی و فرهنگی آن‌ها را برجسته می‌کند. این ابزارها، که میان زنان و مردان کاربردی مشترک داشته‌اند، در آغاز عمدتاً در ساختارهای درباری و آیینی مورد استفاده قرار می‌گرفتند؛ اما با گذشت زمان، به شکلی ساده‌تر و کارآمدتر در میان اقشار مختلف جامعه گسترش یافتند. با وجود اهمیت موضوع، تاکنون پژوهشی جامع که به طور مستقل به بررسی لوازم خودآرایی پرداخته باشد انجام نشده است؛ از این رو، تحلیل تطبیقی یافته‌های باستان‌شناختی و منابع مکتوب نه تنها به درک جایگاه این ابزارها در زندگی مردم و مناسبات اجتماعی ایران باستان کمک می‌کند، بلکه تا حدی خلاء پژوهشی موجود در این حوزه را نیز برطرف می‌سازد.
