انسانهای اولیه برای غلبهبر حیوانات در شکار، نقش آنها را بر دیوار غارها میکشیدند و با انجام اعمال جادویی و تیراندازی به تصاویر حیوانات، به پیروزی نمادینی بر آنها دست مییافتند. درادامه با پیشرفت فرهنگها و تغییر الگوهای معیشتی، باورها نیز دستخوش تطور شد. رفتهرفته گزیدهای از حیوانات مورداحترام قرار گرفتند و به توتمها تبدیل شدند. بااینحال در ادوار مختلف و با گذشت زمان، شکار همچنان بهعنوان وسیلهای برای نمایش قدرت و اعتقادات مذهبی بهخصوص برای شاهان باقی ماند. بهنظر میرسد که شکار همان عملکرد قدرتنمایی گذشتۀ خود را دارد و حتی در ادوار اسلامی بهعنوان یکی از رفتارهای شاهانه مدنظر بوده است. در ایران، شاید بهترین نمونۀ اینچنین نمایشی را بتوان در دورۀ ساسانی دید. بنابراین، سؤال اصلی این است: آیا هنرمندان این دوره با بهکارگیری موضوع شکار و نمایش آن بهوسیلۀ ابزار و مواد مختلف روی سطوح گوناگون، خواستهاند همان اهمیت شکار در پیش از تاریخ را بهعنوان قدرت نشان دهند؟ هدف پادشاهان ساسانی از انتخاب موضوع شکار برای نقش بستن روی سطوح مختلف در دوران حکومت خود چه بود؟ در این مقاله، با رویکردی تحلیلیتاریخی و بهرهگیری از مطالعات کتابخانهای به موضوع شکار در این ادوار پرداخته شده و هدف اصلی این مقاله رسیدن به مفهومی هرچند مناسب و نزدیک به نوع نگاه مردمان در این ادوار به موضوع شکار است.
