با ظهور جنبش حفاظت مدرن از اواخر قرن نوزدهم، اندیشهها و رویکردهای مرمت و حفاظت از ساختارهای تاریخی وارد عرصه نوینی از تفکر، سیاستگذاری و اقدام گردیدند. این مقاله ضمن مروری بر روند تکامل اندیشهها و رویکردهای حفاظت و باززندهسازی ابنیه و بافتهای تاریخی و فرهنگی و ویژگیهای تفکر نوین مرمت که به جنبش حفاظت مدرن مشهور است، به معرفی برنامههای متأثر از این رویکرد خصوصاً در دهههای اخیر میپردازد. هدف از ارئه ویژگیها و چارچوب نظری و عملی این رویکرد و روند تکاملی آن در این نوشتار معرفی مفاهیم نوین حفاظت و آشنایی با اقدامات رایج متأثر از این جریان در سایر کشورها بهویژه اروپای غربی است. روش تحقیق، مطالعه کتابخآنهای با استناد به مطالب مندرج در کتب، مقالات و اسناد معتبر، همچنین مطالعه موردی از تجارب تجدید حیات شهری در کشورهای انگلستان، فرانسه و ایتالیا است. در پایان این نوشتار سه سند منتشره توسط میراث انگلستان تحت عنوان «اصول حفاظت: سیاستها و قواعد راهنما برای مدیریت پایدار محیطهای تاریخی»، « قدرت مکان: آینده محیطهای تاریخی» و «محیط تاریخی: نیرویی برای آینده ما» معرفی خواهند شد تا ضمن بررسی آخرین دیدگاهها و رویکرد حفاظت، نمونهای از یک چارچوب عملی برای تحقق این سیاست ارائه گردد. این مطالعه نشان میدهد که در رویکرد نوین حفاظت، جامعنگری در توجه به ارزشها و همچنین توجه به محیط تاریخی بهعنوان یک ثروت اقتصادی و اجتماعی و نیز یک منبع فرهنگی عظیم بهعنوان اصول محوری مطرحاند.
