Hesari-ye Gazerani Castle is one of the late Qajar castles, located in the southeast of Esfarayen city, in the province of North Khorasan, Iran, and is one of the historical monuments that depict the architectural culture, social and economic conditions of Esfarayen in the past. Studying this castle is of course a precious opportunity to know and understand the history of the region. After reviewing aerial maps and field studies, it was found that there are many castles belonging to the Qajar period with an almost similar architectural style in the Esfarayen region, which has shown the historical conditions and way of life, especially in this region. This study was conducted with the aim of doing comprehensive research considering the political and social developments and architectural style of the Qajar period in the region. The present research has been done by descriptive method, along with surveying and recording field studies, and is an attempt to identify and understand the historical values and architecture of Hesari-ye Gazerani. It also explains the relationship between social and economic relations and the architectural style of the mentioned historical period in the region. In this article, after a brief review of the types of castles in Iran and understanding the position of Hesari-ye Gazerani castle in terms of existing classifications, a complete understanding of its current and past status has been obtained. Due to the lack of written sources on the history and architecture of the Hesari-ye Gazerani castle complex and its surroundings, the authors decided to obtain much of the basic historical and physical information needed for research through field studies as well as personal conversations at the village and regional level and analysis. Of course, preparing and selecting the correct and citationable information was one of the main priorities of the writers and a lot of time was spent on it. Hesari-ye Gazerani village and castle is the last village that was built in Esfarayen with the structure of the castle and there were residents in the Hesari-ye until the first years of post-Islamic Revolution. The methods of designing and constructing of this castle are very clever and practical; in addition, the history of the castle is an extension of the life and memories of the people who have worked hard for the development and economy of the region. The tendency to live in castles and build enclosed rural biological complexes has a long history in Esfarayen which as well as the simplicity of the structure of the castle has a history in this region. Hesari-ye Gazerani Castle has been created with a simple structure, including houses similar surrounding the compound and attached to a not so high wall and a warehouse in the center of the compound. Unstable political conditions at the time of its establishment and the need to set up an economic and agricultural center in a limited time, made speed and economic efficiency a priority. Fortunately, before the recent destruction, maps and images were prepared of the castle by the authors and by examining the remaining evidence, the exact dimensions of these spaces and the past conditions of the complex can be obtained. In case of reconstruction of the castle, many space facilities will be created to set up the required uses of Hesari-ye Gazerani village and Esfarayen region.
